Pholosho Mokoena

To The Hexagon Trust, I can never thank you enough for setting the basis of my academic career. I got the bursary towards the end of my Matric year, 2007. Because of you, I studied at one of the most prestigious universities in South Africa, Stellenbosch University. I got My BSc (Molecular Biology and Biotechnology) in record time and without failing a single subject. It was a tough 3 years (2008-2010), most of my peers spend SOME of their time partying. I wanted to join them, so I can also enjoy the freedom of varsity, but I just couldn’t. The fear of failing and losing my bursary terrified me. So, I pressed on until I finished my 3 years. Thank you for the opportunity, you have no idea how much you changed my life.

After Stellenbosch, I went on and to do my BSc(Hons) and my MSc(Biochemistry) at the University of Pretoria and the University of Queensland, Australia. I am pursuing my PhD studies but on a part time basis. Thank you, Judy, Venessa and the rest of the team. You truly changed the life of a boy from the township.

I currently work for a French Multinational Pharmaceutical Company as a Medical Scientific Liaison for Vaccines. I have worked in SADC countries, disseminating data on Lysosomal Storage Diseases and giving access to treatment where there was none before. I am seeing the world through my work and it is all thanks to you. Please continue to do the work that you do, you are changing lives. The onus is also on students to remain focus and complete their studies.

Thank you for all you have done for me and the hundreds of students in South Africa. As discussed, if there are Science students in need of opportunities, please connect them with me so I can assist.
